Best places to live in Southampton
Southampton offers a good variety of places to settle down in, from bustling communities near the city centre to pastoral villages a little further afield. Wherever you settle, expect good transport links and a pleasant community feel that’s sure to make you feel welcome.
Netley
The historic village of Netley is one of the most sought-after locations in Southampton, centred around Netley Abbey. There’s a busy and bustling village street with cafes, but you can also enjoy great transport links – the dedicated train station has regular trains into Southampton, taking about 15 minutes into the city. With some beautiful period properties and a quaint, charming feel, property prices are a little higher at £304,337, and houses are in high demand.
Ocean Village
Ocean Village was once home to a working dock, but after plenty of redevelopment, it’s now a pleasant residential area, with plenty of business and leisure including cinemas and restaurants. The ease pf access to the city combined with nearby amenities makes it a popular pick with young professionals – but house prices here are still reasonable, at an average of £264,562.
West End
What was once a tiny hamlet has now become a popular pick for commuters and families, but West End has managed to retain the village feel that makes it so charming. With beautiful Victorian buildings along the high street and plenty of pretty old buildings, the average property price here is £279,559.
Swaythling
A popular pick for students – the main campus of the University of Southampton is conveniently located nearby. With its own train station and good links to transport, this is also a good pick for commuters – and as the average property price sits at a reasonable £252,681, it’s a good spot to invest.
Bassett
A popular area with families, Bassett is also home to plenty of students. Overall, it’s an affluent area, with plenty of larger properties that pull up the average property price to around £344,415. Some of Southampton’s best sporting facilities are located here, including the large Sports Centre, the Southampton Snow Centre and a golf course.
