Visit the Magna Science Adventure Museum
Situated in the former Templeborough Steelworks, the Magna Science Adventure Museum provides a full-day learning experience for the whole family. The museum’s Earth, Air, Fire and Water pavilions, linked to one another by tunnels, allow visitors to explore the elements, while Sci-Tek and Aqua-Tek areas allow for interactive learning about the wonders of science.
Walk around Wentworth Woodhouse
A Grade I listed Georgian country home set in 87 acres of gardens, Wentworth Woodhouse was built in 1735, and is one of the most architecturally magnificent buildings in Rotherham. The former parkland by which Wentworth Woodhouse is surrounded includes lakes, deer parks and walking trails, while the house itself is as splendorous and luxurious as they come, both inside and out, and is just a five-mile drive from Rotherham town centre.
Go for an adventure at Rother Valley Country Park
Rother Valley Country Park is one of the most impressive areas of natural beauty in the whole of South Yorkshire. The park’s stunning lake and 750 acres of parkland make for perfect picnic spots and family outings, while bridleways, footpaths and cycle paths allow for adventure aplenty. In the summer months, you can even try your hand at water sports on the park’s lake, and if bird-spotting is your thing, you certainly won’t be disappointed, as Rother Valley Country Park is teeming with wildlife.
Experience Roche Abbey
Founded in 1147 and set in a stunning wooded valley, Roche Abbey boasts the ruins of a Cistercian monastery, complete with the most intact foundations of any such monastery in the UK. A fascinating slice of South Yorkshire’s history surrounded by picturesque scenery, walking trails and wildlife, Roche Abbey is a must-visit for both history and nature-lovers.
Pet the animals at Thornberry Animal Sanctuary
Located in North Anston in Rotherham, the Thornberry Animal Sanctuary makes a perfect day out for all the family. Not only can visitors enjoy petting a wide array of animals including adopted dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and more, but children can get up close and personal with rabbits and other small animals. Make sure to bring your dog along for a walk along the nearby country lanes and walking trails.
